What did you do to your hair?!

February 11, 2014
Lately when I looked in the mirror I didn't like what I saw.

I saw this haggard looking woman, with messy long hair.

I could of course have tried to get some rest. But who has the time?! So I decided to force the issue, and get myself a perm! After all, if your hair looks perky, your whole look perks up!

But as is often the case with a perm, it takes some time to settle. In other words: right now I'm sporting a big afro.

It's been two weeks, and I'd kind of forgotten all about it when my aunt came to visit. As I opened the door to let her in, I saw her eyes widen with a mixture of glee and alarm.

'What did you to do to your hair?' she asked me.
'Erm… I got myself a perm,' I said, and tried to smooth my afro down a bit.
'That must have cost you a fortune,' she said.
'No, I went to a cheap hairdresser.'
She nodded solemnly and said with pity in her voice: 'That's what I thought.'

I felt a bit unsettled after this conversation. But you couldn't tell by looking at me.

Because my hair looked as perky as ever.

  1. Oh man that's so funny, I do hope your perm settles down soon so you won't get those looks any more. Having bad hair days can suck.

  2. I didn't know people still got perms. Hope your hair gets a little less perky.

  3. I don't think a lot of people do, Nolie. Maybe the perky hair is why...

  4. I had no clue that perms made hair perky and takes a while to settle! So what happens next, does the hair fall a bit and sort of get wavy or something?

  5. LOVE it!:) My hair is naturally curly, so when I let it air dry or even blow dry... people call me the "chia pet" as in crazy hair! Embrace it! ;) :)

  6. My mom used to get perms all the time...we always teased her about it. We joked that she looked like a poodle haha. Well hope your perkiness stays & your hair relaxes :)

  7. Hahaha! I don't even want to think about what someone would think if they knocked on my door and saw my hair. I am in desperate need of a haircut and it shows. Too funny.

  10. After a while the hair kind of relaxes and the curls become more loose. At least, that's what I'm hoping for.

  13. This is a cute post and I love your picture! I believe you can calm down your perm with a mousse after you wet it.

  14. Thanks for the tip Alyssa. I've also been using some Argan oil, and that calms it down too!

  16. I have naturally curly hair so I have never really understood the drive to perm ones hair :) Having a sense of perky is neat though, i like that mindset! I think it is awesome you took a chance!
