The importance of tracking your menstrual cycle

menstrual cycle

It's one of those things I want my daughters to know: the importance of keeping track of your monthly cycle.

I track mine in my trusty Moleskine. I put a smily face on the day my period starts. Because I don't mind getting my period. In fact I welcome it as an opportunity to take it easy for a few days. And after giving birth five times I am no longer plagued by stomach aches during my period.

In general a menstrual cycle takes 28 days. But some women's cycle is shorter, others have a longer cycle, and there are also lots of women whose cycle varies each month!

Reasons to keep track of your monthly cycle

  • It's a great way to keep in touch with your body. After tracking your monthly cycle for a few months you'll start to see a pattern! Like feeling a bit melancholy around day 14, or feeling homicidal around day 27!
  • If you want to get pregnant it's good to know when you're fertile! You can buy special ovulation sets, but if you don't want to spend the money just keep track yourself.
  • For practical reasons. No one likes to be caught off guard by getting their period when they're wearing a pair of white pants for example
  • If you're experiencing problems with your period, your doctor will ask you about your cycle. So it's good to know your numbers.
  • When menopause comes along your cycle may change. If you're tracking your cycle you may notice this sooner rather than later.

Handy tools to track your montly cycle

I'm a paper and pen kind of girl myself. But of course there are a lot of nifty apps out there too! Just google 'menstrual cycle tracker app'!

Do you keep track of your monthly cycle? If so, how?

  1. I use 'period tracker'. It's a phone app (android). I have never been very good at keeping track but the app has changed all that for me. I'm still not good at tracking all the different aspects of my cycle but the app tells me when I'm fertile, lets me add notes, add icons for any symptom I want to keep track of, tells me what my average cycle time frame is and a whole host of stuff I just wouldn't bother with if it were just up to me to take notes. All I have to do is remember to push a button at the start and end of my cycle. Yep, I'm pleased I've finally managed it.

  2. Good advice. I used to track them and definitely knew when to expect PMS etc. The good thing about post Menopause is that you don't have to worry about the white pants thing anymore. Thanks for adding this to the Healthy Living Link Party . We hope you will come back again on Wednesday.
