Who do I think I am! God?!

'You can't outrun the long arm of the law!' Kenny Rogers warned, but how far do the arms, and influence of a mom reach?

After lots of struggling and hitting each other with different research results, psychologists finally agree: a child's development is equally determined by parenting, environment and genetics.

Yet as a mom I feel 100% responsible for my children's happiness! Whereas about fifty percent of their happiness has nothing to do with me. I'm neither omniscient nor omnipotent. I can't protect them from everything, and perhaps I shouldn't want to. Because isn't life supposed to hurt now and then? Isn't that what helps you grow?

Even God got in trouble with that 50% he couldn't influence. The minute he turned his back, Adam and Eve took a bite from the forbidden fruit.

So at least I'm a in good company!

  1. You only really get 25% assuming they got half their genes from their father. So the 25% they are good, thats you, 25% ok, your spouse, 50% they are in trouble - its the environment. easy peasy

  2. Ugh, I am struggling with my oldest with this very issue, he is 8. He is having a hard time dealing with anger, and reacting appropriately when someone "does something" to him. I wish I could be everywhere at all times like God... Oh well we just do the best we can.

They do need to experience the ups and downs of life in order to learn coping skills - as hard as it is to see them hurt.
