Personal branding, and why it's so important!

When people google you, what do they find?

Do they find information telling them about your latest discovery on how to get kids to clean up their rooms? Or about you inventing a groundbreaking device turning hubbies all over the world into solicitous men? Or do they find a picture of you looking drunk, with your hair in a mess and your panties around your ankles?

'You never get a second chance to make a first impression,' the saying goes, but what if your first impression makes people not want to take a second look?!

It used to be so much easier: maybe your neighbours knew you like to dance around naked in your garden, but it wouldn't go much farther than that. However, thanks to the internet, people from all over the world are now just a few mouse clicks away from obtaining information about you! Everybody's a detective nowadays, and their tool is Google.

So it is smart to do some personal branding, and make sure your first impression is a good one! So people want to come back for a second, third and fourth impression! Just think of what happened to Teletubby Tinkiewinkie who was nót careful about his personal branding! Because of his little red purse, rumors spread across he was gay, and soon it was all over the internet.

Here's what I would like my personal brand to be: warm, friendly, nice, intelligent, funny, caring and concerned about world peace everywhere.

What's your personal brand?

  1. I've always said be careful what you put on the internet. It will be there forever! My rule is, if it's something I wouldn't want my mom to see or read, I don't share it. 🙂

  2. Laughing! I told my husband yesterday that I have a split personality online. I have two blogs (don't judge my sanity by this fact alone, please): my personal/faith blog -- I can't be personal without my faith and I can't have faith without being personal. AND my travel blog (http://familytravelsonabudget.blogspot.com), still personal, but specific. Every time I read a post, I consider whether my response is personal or travel-related. Thus, split personality.
Nice post! You are warm, friendly, etc...

  3. For the life of me, I don't know why people would ever upload some crazy, drunken, half naked photo of themselves on the Internet. Just asking for it! You are so right on this...great post!

  4. Nicole... have I told you how much I love your blog lately? WELL I DO!! I love the topics (this one is a great one!!) ... I love your right as well.
