I'm a Mary, so I prepare like a Martha

Martha and Mary

Whenever I have friends or family over for a visit, I'm a busy little bee before they arrive. I take great care to make sure the house is neat, clean and welcoming. I make sure there's a nice pot of coffee brewing, and of course there's tea and cake. Because once my guests have arrived I tend to forget my duties als a hostess. All my attention is focused on the people before me and how they're doing. Not on their drinks. My catering skills lie forgotten in a corner.

The story of Mary and Martha

Maybe you're familiar with the story of Mary and Martha. I always have this feeling of recognition when I hear it. I can especially relate to Mary. For those of you who don't know the story, here it is:

'As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, "Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!" "Martha, Martha," the Lord answered, 'you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.'

I'm both a Martha and a Mary

By being a Martha before people visit my home, I can then be a Mary : )

Which is you: Mary or Martha? Or a bit of both?
